The Book Revue is delighted to be hosting and interviewing award-winning journalist and author, Tim Butcher, about his most recent book, The Trigger: Hunting the Assassin Who Brought the World to War. If you have been lucky enough to hear him talk about his previous books, Blood River and Chasing the Devil, you will know what an accomplished and charismatic speaker he is.
“This book is a tour de force” – The Guardian
“An incisive, shrewd, wholly compelling investigation of an assassin’s life and times” – William Boyd
The Trigger sees Butcher retracing the journey of Gavrilo Princip, who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in June 1914, and thereby fired the opening shots of the First World War. Amazingly little is known of Princip and Tim Butcher goes in search of this man who changed the course of modern history. He follows in Princip’s footsteps from his humble birthplace in western Bosnia to Sarajevo and on to Serbia. This is an extraordinary journey through landscapes and communities harrowed by the past. The events of 28 June 2014 are tangled with the horrors of the massacres of the early 1990’s. Some of the memories are Butcher’s own – experiences gathered whilst he was a war reporter during the Yugoslavian wars.
