Queen of the Free State is a vivid memoir of a childhood – the terrors, joys and incidents felt so deeply and recalled so beautifully.
Growing up Jewish in an Afrikaans town was never going to be easy and then feeling alienated from family and an authoritarian system which makes arbitrary rules regarding race means that this book pulsates with life. Sad and funny simultaneously, it is a beautifully told story of childhood, of difference and of dreams. Faded black and white family photographs add to this wonderfully told story.
Jennifer Friedman grew up in the small town in the then Orange Free State , studied at the University of Cape Town and now lives in Australia.
